The Artifact is a device set by the Achaians on Earth, Zakir and many other planets. The Achaia have 336 star systems and counting containing Artifacts. They appear to be grown from landed Achaian Rings.
At the end of the second season, all of the Artifacts are destroyed after the crew of the Salvare infect the Achaia with a computer virus. The Artifact on Earth crumbles and shortly thereafter, the solar system is bombarded by messages from hundreds of species thanking humanity for freeing them from the Achaia.
