The show is well made and the acting is actually good. But the sceince is terrible. From the whole 'mining' scene, where they were able to get oxygen for the whole ship from 2 cases of crystals, to the gravity slingshot maneuver around the star where they actually got into orbit around it first... The ship AI which can't hold more than one conversation at a time...
I can keep going...
It's not little things that you can suspend disbelief around, it just seems lazy. Like they made a scince fiction show just to abandon any and all pretense of science. Like the 'dark matter' that was actually a dark cloud. Dark matter is invisible and weakly interacting. We don't see dark matter and that is why we can't undersand it. They could have said 'interstellar gas'. It would have curved light, and it would have been opaque. It wouldn't have been a surprise, but it is still better than 'dark matter'. Sure, dark matter sounds cooler than 'cold interstellar gas', but they could have used it in an episode where ther was an invisible gravity anomaly of 'condensed dark matter' or something.
I hate writing posts like this. But there was so much potential. Good actors. Decent production. Awful writing.
I have hopes for S2 (I haven't seen it yet)
I figure this will find an audience here... Niko Breckinridge on the most recent episode of the Fanaddicts podcast talking about her love/obsession with dogs.
One thing about this show that I am trying to understand is, just how far in the future is it? The technology appears to be futuristic and they mention events that hasn't happened yet, but the clothes, attitudes and general culture (For example, they had the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star sang in it) that would be similar to this time? Are there any guesses about when the show would have taken place, or any theories about why the culture is so similar to our time's?
